Character Inspiratons…what floats my author boat.

13105995_545514795621324_1270205044_o

My entire book series had been inspired by one character…Thomas Shelby in Peaky Blinders. My character, Benedict Harrison has omitted the violent aspect of his character but embraced his other complex qualities…one of which is his eyes.

In my novel and I quote…

“They say the eyes are the window to the soul but like his demeanor…Benedict’s are opaque.”

Gillian Murphy.jpg

I think it’s fair to say I have a crush on Gillian Murphy or to be more specific his character Thomas Shelby. Those eyes…sigh.

The second main character in my book is Siena Waters. I based her on Rosie Huntington-Whitley. She is lush. Never see a bad photo of her and I think you’ll agree, she’d catch the attention of my dream boat character Benedict Harrison.

siena

Another character that features strongly in my series is Guy Walker. Now I’ve opted for some home grown talent and based him on none other, than Scotlands finest…Gerrry Butler. Well be rude not too 🙂

And I’ve saved the best for last…the infamous Anna Dunbar. She and Guy have a volatile relationship  that awakens their dark desires and pushes both their limits—smoking hot romance!

About The Author

JA

Hi there!

When I set out to write these books, I wanted to create something that mirrored exactly the kind of books I like to read. My favourites are always originals featuring strong male and female protagonists with attitude. Benedict is detached and an enigma until he meets Siena. She turns his world upside down and he suddenly reconnects. I can’t tell you how many readers tell me how they were gripped by their story. How they loved the originality of the Braille Club and the other two stories running through it. The book has a great mix of characters!

The Braille Club Series books are an interesting blend of genres. Although sensuality plays a big part, there is also intrigue and a touch of thriller.

I’m a dreamer, writer and wine drinker and not always in that order. With the publication of my books, I realised my ultimate dream of becoming a writer. This has been a rollercoaster ride with lots of highs and lows but I’ve loved every crazy second. My next adventure is into script writing where I hope to transform my book into a drama series. I love to connect. Be sure to drop by FB page or sign up to my newsletter http://bit.ly/1RawSm3 for exclusive giveaways, secret chapters and upcoming events.

Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase

The Braille Club Unbound Kindle Edition by J.A. Kerr is off to a great start with the reminder of where Book 1 left off and a brief intro into Harrison’s, the club Siena and Benedict had opened, with the secret “exclusive” Braille Club. The writing is tight and immediately propels the reader into the story with a mystery of a white envelope and Siena wondering “was it the DNA results” that would be “central to the court case against Nick.” I want to know about this. I want to know what’s going on in the secret club. I can’t put the darn book down.
The story line continues full-bore with chapters beginning in italics about the Braille Club: the secret key and code, etc. The tension in the story doesn’t let up in this fast-paced action packed sensual mysterious combination of thriller and erotic read. Action burns off the pages with descriptions describing an envelope that felt like a “ticking bomb” to “fingers squeezing at the back of her neck” as we learn about the relationship between our protagonists. Siena and the terror she feels about her ex, Nick, who is in prison where any semblance of humanity has been rubbed out of him. Her husband Benedict who Nick has it in for. And the other cast of characters such as Guy the ex-cop who works for Siena and Benedict and Niven the gorgeous model who feels like she’s being watched. The scenes are made richer with the involvement of Siena’s twins: Leo and Reeva, giving her panic-struck character depth. The plot twists and turns as the characters develop with lurid sexual scenes imagined and real involving Guy and his ex Anna. Once in place, the tension and conflict continue and don’t let up until the last page. For my money, this is really good writing. The sexual scenes are inherent parts in moving along the storyline that’s as every bit human as the rest of us out here lusting over the pages before us. Kudos to the talented J.A. Kerr for pulling off another gripping well-written book.

Tales of the Unexpected, My Bookshelf and Latest Reads.

13105995_545514795621324_1270205044_oIMG_1585

My bookshelf is a subject I love talking about because there is a story behind it (isn’t there always?) and yet again a party, well small gathering really, of some lovely girls I like to spend time with, and a fortune teller. However, I’ll get back to that in a moment. Now I realise you are looking at my empty bookshelves in puzzlement…they contain no books.

Excellent observation. In order for my writing room to look chic for my small gathering, I had to stuff all my books into “the abyss”  (my under stairs cupboard ) and in my bedroom. I have lacked the motivation to enter “the abyss” again  to retrieve them. It’s dark and dangerous in there. You must balance your body precariously over sleeping bags, garden cushions, and sharp implements. I often launch myself inside like a scrum half, I push and shove until I find what it is that I’m looking for, or not, which is usually the case. To inform the gathering, I send out a group text without engaging my brain.

J.A. Kerr: Fancy an evening of fizz and fortune telling?

The resounding yes, led me to a complete meltdown and a serious Turbo Tidy. I stared at my bulging, sagging bookshelves in despair. I Googled “chic book cases” and was shocked that this entailed, no  books! I was confused. Aren’t they called bookshelves for a reason? The clue is in the name: a shelf for books, but who am I to go agaisnt the designer trends. Out went the books (yes I did feel guilty as they stared at me mutiniously from the large Ikea shopping bag) and in went the useless objects—no good to man nor beast. I stood back and sighed. I missed my books already but did concede to a certain arty minimalism. I was gratified as everyone complimented my new bookshelves at the gathering. My chest swelled with pride until the words, “Show us your book, then.”

My face flushed as ( you’ve guessed it)The Braille Club 3D 2 I realised with horror, my own book was in “The Abyss”, fortunately a bowl of crisps and top up of fizz distracted them. The next day I went in, narrowly avoiding a punctured lung from the golf clubs, to retrieve my pride and joy. Lesson learned, treat your books with respect. They are someones labour of love…

I’m digressing, sorry. Since I cannot write about what is on my bookshelf unless the challenge was changed to, What is in J.A. Kerr’s Abyss? That sounds a bit dodgy, I will write about what I would have on my shelves, not strictly my latest reads but perhaps the most memorable.

WARNING: THESE BOOKS ARE DIFFERENT, SMART, INTRIGUING, AND COMPELLING!

The Sandman by Lars Kepler. GENRE: CRIME.

He’s Sweden’s most prolific serial killer.

Jurek Walter is serving a life sentence. Kept in solitary confinement, he is still considered extremely dangerous by psychiatric staff. He’ll lull you into a sense of calm.Mikael knows him as “The Sandman”. Seven years ago, he was taken from his bed along with his sister. They were both presumed dead. He has one target left.

When Mikael is discovered on a railway line, close to death, the hunt begins for his sister.the sandman To get to the truth, Joona Linna will need to get closer than ever to the man who stripped him of a family; the man who wants Linna dead.

I was drawn into the story immediately and could not stop reading. The authors, writing as Lars Kepler, Swedish writers Alexander Ahndoril and Alexandra Coelho Ahndoril have had considerable success with a series of crime novels featuring their indomitable and charismatic Detective Inspector Joona Linna. The Sandman is fourth in the series and it does not disappoint. Fantastic storyline with compelling characters and a pace that builds with every page. Intelligent writing that will keep you coming back for more.

The Help by Kathryn Stockett GENRE: HISTORICAL FICTION

Enter a vanished and unjust world: Jackson, Mississippi, 1962. Where black maids raise white children, but aren’t trusted not to steal the silver…the help

There’s Aibileen, raising her seventeenth white child and nursing the hurt caused by her own son’s tragic death; Minny, whose cooking is nearly as sassy as her tongue; and white Miss Skeeter, home from College, who wants to know why her beloved maid has disappeared. Skeeter, Aibileen and Minny. No one would believe they’d be friends; fewer still would tolerate it. But as each woman finds the courage to cross boundaries, they come to depend and rely upon one another. Each is in a search of a truth. And together they have an extraordinary story to tell…

I loved this book. I smiled, laughed and cried my way through it and to me, an author’s ability to make me do all three…is a triumph! I strongly recommend you read this book, it’s fantastic. ( A note to all authors…be careful who you base your characters on!)

A lawsuit against Kathryn Stockett, the author of best-selling novel “The Help,” has divided brother and sister in a dispute about the real-life identity of one of her fictional characters.Ablene Cooper, the longtime nanny for Stockett’s brother, has filed a $75,000 lawsuit against the author, claiming she was upset by the book that characterizes black maids working for white families in the family’s hometown of Jackson, Miss., during the 1960s.Cooper also once babysat for Stockett’s daughter, according to the Jackson Clarion Ledger, and the lawsuit alleges that she had been assured by Stockett, 42, that her likeness would not be used in the book. The 2009 novel was an instant favorite among book clubs, written in the voice of black “help” by a woman raised by maids herself and who is white.Cooper, 60, maintains that the book’s fictional character — Aibileen Clark — is her. She says the alleged unauthorized appropriation of her name and image is emotionally upsetting, and her employers, Carol and Robert Stockett III agree.

Flowers in The Attic by Virgina Andrews. GENRE: HORROR. An oldie but a goodie.

At the top of the stairs there are four secrets hidden. Blond, beautiful, innocent, and flowers int the atticstruggling to stay alive…

They were a perfect family, golden and carefree—until a heartbreaking tragedy shattered their happiness. Now, for the sake of an inheritance that will ensure their future, the children must be hidden away out of sight, as if they never existed. Kept on the top floor of their grandmother’s vast mansion, their loving mother assures them it will be just for a little while. But as brutal days swell into agonizing months and years, Cathy, Chris, and twins Cory and Carrie realize their survival is at the mercy of their cruel and superstitious grandmother…and this cramped and helpless world may be the only one they ever know.

I must admit I’ve not read horror for a long time (don’t have the stomach for it, Big Jessie that I am ) but remember I could not put this down. Shocking, gripping and utterly compelling in it’s time…

Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. GENRE: ROMANCE. Last but not least. Romance comes in many forms. Forget Mills and Boon and indulge yourself in this unusual love story, I loved it.

When 17 year old Isabella Swan moves to Forks, Washington to live with her father she expects that her new life will be as dull as the town.

But in spite of her awkward manner and low expectations, she finds that her new classmates are drawn to this pale, dark-haired new girl in town. But not, it seems, the Cullen family. These five adopted brothers and sisters obviously prefer their own company and will make no exception for Bella.

Bella is convinced that Edward Cullen in particular hates her, but she feels a strange attraction to him, although his hostility makes her feel almost physically ill. He seems determined to push her away – until, that is, he saves her life from an out of control car.

Bella will soon discover that there is a very good reason for Edward’s coldness. He, and his family, are vampires – and he knows how dangerous it is for others to get too close.

Tell Me Why I Don’t Like Marketing, Tell Me Why I Don’t Like Marketing!

social mediaAs an author it’s not enough to write a book (if only) and it’s not enough to write a good book (I just can’t get a break here) because it all comes down to marketing, in an industry where social marketing is key…or is it?

I ‘d like to connect with readers but I find that happens rarely. I do however get lots of connections from people who promise to help sell my book (for a price), who can get me more twitter follower (for a price) and my personal favourite who will write a review (yep you guessed it for a price) and this is just from twitter.

Don’t get me started on Facebook…lots of messages from guys wanting to connect but not with my books 😦

Instagram and instantly forget. My life is boring, no nude selfies kim (believe me…that’s for everyone’s benefit) or amazing make-up, (we all know mirrors don’t lie, I’m just grateful they don’t laugh) or artsy landscapes (my thumb appears in almost all my pic’s) so another dead end in terms of marketing.

Pinterest, Google + LinkedIn (guilty of not making the time to build these platforms) but still unsure they sell books.

So what does? In my opinion media exposure. People talking about your book or talking to you as an author about your work? Good old fashioned word of mouth because although my dreams have been realized by publishing my books…I really want them to sell too. In order to sell them, I need media support. My local newspaper did a wonderful job and my sales did spike as a result but I need national coverage. So my plan is simple leave no stone unturned in the media industry to get noticed. Magazine, newspaper, television or radio watch out, I have you in my sights…Press story

Book inspiration led to Masked Party, an Unfortunate Blockage and my Writing Room Improvements.

13105995_545514795621324_1270205044_o

Can I clarify? My blog post centers around my new and improved Writing Room and this all came around when I decided to throw a party. A masked party, been dying to do that for ages. Now, having a party is not for the faint-hearted or for the clinically sane. Can I say in my defence…it sounded like a good idea at the time.

As the party approached I cast a critical eye over our family room and shivered. The corner desk where I sat most days and wrote was truly hideous. It had to go. I even put it on Gumtree for free and got no takers. That’s how hideous it was. So in secret, I ordered a new and beautiful desk to replace it. All my scheming almost backfired when my desk arrived and my baffled hubby  argued with the driver that the delivery was not ours. I came clean and signed for the desk. I was saved from his wrath by a shout from upstairs that the toilet was blocked.

Using this diversion to my advantage, we trooped upstairs to investigate. Yep, it was well and truly blocked, the culprit was not identified because neither of my children would take responsibility. After a number of recriminations were made, our mop was selected as the best tool for the job. As the toilet was flushed and the mop repeatedly rammed down the bowel, there came a shout  from downstairs. We rushed down and stared in horror as water poured through our hall ceiling. Just to be sure (I know why would you?) the sequence was repeated with further flushing and ramming of mop down bowel, and yes this did result in more water pouring through the hall ceiling.

“Stop,” I shrieked. It was dripping onto my new desk which has been left in the hall.

With much cursing and maneuvering, the desk was put in the family room. I was immediately smitten but was pushed aside as my hubby frantically searched the Internet for a plumber. I stood by  itching to shove him out to the way. How dare he be the first person to use my desk.

“It’s the waste pipe,” he told me “It’s blocked. This is bad.”

I rolled my eyes. My hubby was a pessimist by nature.

“We’ll have to cancel the party,” he sighed

“No way. This house has never been so clean,” I cried. I even attacked our bathroom tiles, with a toothbrush, it took me hours, and the memory was still fresh.

Dynorod came to our rescue. I left the  next day to take my aching body to the hairdresser. My face was haggard after the big clean (the only thing worse than the Big Clean, is the Guilt Clean…but that’s another story) and I was in desperate need of a make-over. Half way through my transformation my phone rang.

“There is poo all over our porch,” said my hubby frantically. I pretended not to hear with the hairdryer in the background, so he sent me a text.

Waste pipe completely blocked. Dynorod cut a hole in the pipe to insert a camera and two seconds later the guy was covered in poo. It’s everywhere…it’s gushing!

I slipped my phone back into my bag and sagged. The hairdresser worked her magic and my previously ratty locks were transformed by her bouncy blow dry but Poogate was weighing on my mind. As I parked the car in the driveway my phone buzzed.

Got it fixed. Porch stinks but has been cleaned. I’m out buying air fresheners!

I almost gagged when I opened the car door “Eau de Poo” was not a welcome scent. However, several diffusers and air fresheners later, the party went ahead and the story was recounted amid laughter and alcohol. So as I sit  now at my beautiful desk,  (which under normal circumstances would have been returned) I can’t help but thank my upstairs toilet for having a hand in securing its future…and the party was a great success!
